Willing is not enough, we must do." 이걸 다시 말하자면, "Bruce Lee said that knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do."라고 할 수 있어. 이런 것을 두고 Reported 또는 Indirect speech(간접 화법)이라고 해.
Indirect speech, also known as reported speech or indirect discourse (US), is a means of expressing the content of statements, questions, or other utterances, without quoting them explicitly as is done indirect speech. For example, He said "I'm coming" is direct speech, whereas He said (that) he was coming is indirect speech. - Ref. Wikipedia
보고된 연설 또는 간접 담화로도 알려진 간접 화법은 직접 연설 에서처럼 명시적으로 인용하지 않고 진술, 질문 또는 기타 발화의 내용을 표현하는 수단이다. 예를 들어, 걔 "가는 중이야"라고 말했어는 직접 화법이고 걔는 오고 있다고 말했어는 것은 간접 화법이다.
잘 있었어 Jay? 오늘은 Reported speech(보고된 담화) 또는 Indirect speech(직접적이지 않은 담화) 즉, 한국어로는 간접화법 이라고 불리는 말하기 방법을 알아보자! 오늘은 반지의 제왕의 엘프이자 매드릭스의 스미스요원인 휴고 위빙(Hugo weaving)의 말을 들어볼거야.
1. 대화 도중 상대방(Agent Smith)에게 그의 현재 또는 이전 당시의 상황이나 상태 또는 상대방(내가(말하는 사람 자신이) 아닌 다른 사람)이 한 말을 전해주는 말!
◎ You want to tell somebody what Johnny said. There are two ways to deliver this: / 간접화법은 두 가지 방법으로 상대에게 말 할 수 있어.(Direct speech / 직접 화법)
◎ Option_1: You can repeat his words. / 대상(Johnny)이 말했던 것을 그대로 복사 붙여넣기 하듯이 말할 수 있어.
● Johnny: Smith 요원이 말했어. '나 아픔을 느끼고 있어.(나 아파)'라고.
= Agent Smith said 'I'm feeling ill.'.
◎ Option_2: 또는, Reported speech(간접 화법)을 통해 전달할 수 있어.
● Smith요원은 말했어. 그가 아픔을 느끼고 있었다고(= 그가 아픔을 느끼고 있었다고 말했어).
= Agent Smith said that he was feeling ill.
◎ 구어체인 회화가 아닌 글을 쓰는 문어체 에서 Direct speech(직접화법)를 사용할 땐 꼭 Quotation marks(따옴표)['']를 열고 닫게 되어 있어. 그리고 구어체 즉, 대화를 하면서 상대방이나 다른 어떤 것을 비꼬거나 할때에도 Quotation marks를 아래 이미지와 같이 손가락으로 표현해.
2. Reported speech(보고되는 담화/간접화법) 사용하기! 머리를 기르고 귀도 뾰족하게 만들고 썬글라스를 벗고 엘프가 된 스미스요원.
◎ Reported speech(보고된 담화/간접화법)을 말할 때, 문장에서 main Verb는 보통 Past tense(과거시제)를 쓰게 돼. 예를들면 "Johnny said... / I told you that... etc". 그리고 나머지 Verbs(동사들)도 마찬가지로 Past tense(과거형)을 사용해. 예를 들어 한번 보자!
● Smith요원은 말했어. 그가 아픔을 느끼고 있었다고(= 그가 아픔을 느끼고 있었다고 말했어).
= Agent Smith said that he was feeling ill.
● 난 스미스 엘프 요원에게 말했어. 나는 어떤 사탕도 가지고 있지 않았다고.
= I told Elf Agent Smith that I didn't have any candy.
◎ 또 위 문장에서 that을 생략하고 말 하기도 가능해.
◎ 그리고 문장을 Past perfect(과거 완료)로 시작했다면 끝맺음도 Past perfect(과거 완료)로 해주도록!!! 말 그대로 문장 내의 시간을 서로 동일하게 맞춰줘야 한다는 것이야.
● 스미스 엘프 요원은 그가 아픔을 느끼면서 일어나(기상) 왔었다고 말했어. 그래서 그는 직장으로 오고 있지 않아 왔어.(= 스미스 아파서 출근 못했었대.)
= Elf Agent Smith had woken up feeling ill, so he hadn't gone to work.
3. V: You said you wanted... | 두려움 없이 살길 원했잖아? | 가면을 쓴 엘프 스미스요원.
● Evey hammond(나탈리 포트만): 당신은 나를 고문했어요. 왜죠?
= You tortured me. Why?
● V(휴고 위빙): 넌 너가 두려움 없이 살기를 원했다고 말했어.(= 두려움없이 살길 바랬잖아?) 난 한 더 쉬운 방법이 있어 왔기를 바라지만 없었어.
= You said you wanted to live without fear. I wish there'd been an easier way... but there wasn't.
