Jay~ my brother! How much money do you want to make? How rich are you gonna be? 오늘은 Conjunction(접속사)랑 Preposition(전치사)를 알아보는 마지막 날이야. 레오나르도 디카프리오 주연이고 월스트리트 실화속 주인공 Jordan Belfort를 그린 영화 The Wolf of Wall Street를 한번 보면서 마무리 짓자고!!!
1. by...(~까지는) = not later than
● 사장님, 오늘 제가 사장님께 그 서류들을 보냈어요, 그러니까 사장님은 월요일 까지 그것들을 받으셔야 합니다. (= 오늘 서류 보냈으니 월요일까진 받으실 겁니다.)
= Sir, I sent the documents to you today, so you should receive them by Monday.
◎ 위의 말은 월요일에(on Monday) 또는 그 전에(before Monday)를 염두해 두고 하는 말이야. 월요일 이후(later than Monday)는 포함되지 않아. 다른 예들도 보자.
● 우리 서두르는게 좋을 거야. 우리 5시 정각까지는 집에 있어야 해.
= We'd better hurry. We have to be home by 5 o'clock.
● Zoy는 어딨어? 걔 지금 까지는 여기 있어야 한다고...
= Where's Zoy? She should be here by now.
◎ 지금이나 지금으로부터 이전을 얘기하는 것이니까 대화하는 시점 이전에 이미 도착해 있었어야 한다는 의미야.
2. until/till(~(때)까지) = how long the situation continues | by와 until을 비교해 보자.
Something continues until a time in the future
● Joel은 월요일까지 멀리 있을 거야.
= Joel will be away until Monday. (= he'll be back on Monday)
● 난 11시 30분까지 일하고 있을 거야.
= I'll be working until 11:30.
Something happens by a time in the future
● Joel은 월요일 까지는 돌아올 거야.
= Joel will be back by Monday. (= He will be back not later than Monday)
● 난 11시 반 까지는 내 일을 끝내올 거야.
= I'll have finished my work by 11:30.
3. by the time something happens/happened. | 사건중심으로 대입해 말하기
◎ 특정 시간대를 말하는 by, until과는 조금 다른 형태로 "by the time... (...인 그 시간 까지)"라고 하면서, 행동이나 상황이 이루어지는 사건 그 자체를 시점으로써 사용해 말을 하는 거야.
● 지금 그 은행을 가기에는 너무 늦었어. 우리가 그곳에 도착하는 그 시간 까지면, 그건 이미 닫을 거야. (= 지금 은행 가기엔 늦었어. 도착할 때 쯤이면 닫을걸.)
= It's too late to go to the bank now. By the time we get there, it will be closed.
● 나 어제 저녁에 할 일이 많이 있었어. 내가 끝냈던 그 때 난 너무 피곤했어.
= I had a lot of work to do yesterday evening. I was very tired by the time I finished.
4. The wolf of Wall Street_ Jordan Belfort(디카프리오): 거래 채결전에 포지션을 잘 잡는게 열쇠죠. 월 스트리트 저널기사를 읽을 때까지면 이미 늦은 거거든요.
● Jordan Belfort: 지금 이런 상황에서 돈을 버는 그 열쇠는 거래채결 전에 스스로 포지션을 잡아야 한다는 거에요. 왜냐하면 사장님께서 그 월스트리트 저널에서 그것에 대해 읽을 때면, 그건 이미 너무 늦기 때문이에요.
= Now the key to making money in a situation like this is to position yourself now before the settlement. Because by the time you read about it in The Wall Street Journal, it's already too late.
